Tied in Tradition: Threads Unseen

Tied in Tradition: Threads Unseen explores the enduring connection between past and present, blending cultural heritage with personal identity to celebrate diverse representation in sculpture. Through the portrayal of a male figure of Chinese heritage, this inclusive artwork reflects the delicate balance between tradition and individuality, inviting reflection on how cultural narratives shape who we are.

This limited-edition piece features two life-sized portraits of the same subject, each mounted on elegant wooden bases. Carefully positioned, the portraits evoke a silent, introspective dialogue — a meeting of shared heritage and personal evolution. A loosely tied traditional knot and a single earring subtly symbolise the tension and harmony between honouring cultural customs and embracing self-expression.

Crafted in lifelike bronze resin, with the option of bronze casting, the sculpture captures a timeless conversation between tradition and innovation. Its serene expressions and textured surfaces convey quiet strength, encouraging deeper reflection on how we carry forward our heritage while shaping our own identities.

The separation of the wooden bases represents the unique paths individuals take, even when grounded in the same cultural foundation. Together, the portraits highlight the invisible threads that bind us across generations, cultures, and personal stories, making this piece a profound example of contemporary cultural storytelling.

A fragment of this work, titled Threads Unseen, isolates the face, neck, and hairline to emphasise the emotional depth and intricate craftsmanship of the subject’s gaze. This focused detail invites viewers to consider how identity is shaped by both what is visible and what remains unseen.

Tied in Tradition: Threads Unseen is more than a sculpture; it is an invitation to reflect on resilience, belonging, and the evolving relationship between heritage and selfhood, all while championing inclusive art and diverse narratives.

Available as a limited edition in bronze resin. Bronze casting available on request.
