Tied in Tradition: Threads Unseen brings together two life-sized portraits of the same male figure of Chinese heritage, exploring the enduring relationship between cultural heritage and personal identity.
Mounted on separate polished wooden bases, the portraits create a silent dialogue between past and present, shared heritage and individual experience. A loosely tied traditional knot and single earring subtly express the balance between honouring cultural traditions and embracing self-expression.
The second portrait, Threads Unseen, focuses on the face, neck and hairline, drawing attention to the expression and gaze of the subject. Presented alongside Tied in Tradition, it invites consideration of both what is visible and what remains unseen in the formation of identity.
The separation of the wooden bases reflects the individual paths people take, even when grounded in a shared cultural foundation. Together, the portraits evoke the invisible threads that connect generations, cultures and personal stories.
